Lexi Aviation was started about seven years ago when South African born Gavin Michal sold his microlight because he wanted to fly something a little bigger, and wanted the experience of creating a flying machine with his own hands. He purchased plans for an all wooden two seater airplane; started building in his private workshop, and suddenly everybody was coming to see engineering turn into art. Aeronautical engineers and art students were fascinated to see a lost art and science come alive.

Gavin won three Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) awards for three years consecutively, and is regarded by many as an expert in the science of wooden aircraft construction.

Lexi Aviation has built a number of classic aircraft, including Tiger Moths, Stearmans, and Pitts Specials. All the wooden components are made in house, by Gavin himself, the old fashioned way but with ultra modern epoxy glues, so the aircraft is original but better and stronger. Many of these components are made for the local as well as international market. A set of ribs for the four wings of a Pitts, for example, can be made up within a few weeks and shipped anywhere in the world.

You probably won’t get better work on a wooden airplane anywhere else.
